Morphological Study of the Ductus Thoracicus

Abstract
The gross anatomy of the thoracic duct concerning the draining pattern of each lymphatic trunk into the duct, the determination of the level of the lower end in the thoracic duct, the occurrence of the cisterna chyli, the ascending course or pattern of the duct along the posterior mediastinum and the termination of the duct to the vein was studied in the cadavers of Korean adults and fetuses.
In the draining patterns of the right and left lumbar trunks, and the intestinal trunk into the original or lower end of the thoracic duct, each lymphatic trunk was independently opened to the lower end of the duct in 9 out of 27 cases. The common trunk, which was formed by two or three lymphatic trunks and drained into the lower end of the duct, occurred in 9 out of 27 cases as well.
The cisterna was found in about halves of cases and located in front of the first lumbar vertebra mostly. However, the incidence of the latter was in less than halves of cases.
The ascending course of the thoracic duct was relatively less variable and mostly the duct crossed the midline to the left at about the level of the fifth thoracic vertebra of the adults and at about the the level of the fourth thoracic vertebra of the fetuses.
The insula was less frequently found in only the upper and the lower portions of the thoracic duct. The terminal portion of the thoracic duct was mostly a single tube or channel and the site of the termination was frequently the left venous angle.
